The Music Exchange brings Tampa's creative community together at Ybor’s 1920 this July

The July 8 event pairs six local performers with visual artists, raffles, and community partners for a celebration of Tampa Bay's independent arts scene.

One of the biggest strengths of Tampa Bay's independent music scene has always been its willingness to build from within. When venues, artists, promoters, and local businesses invest in each other, the result is often something bigger than a concert. That's the idea behind an upcoming community-focused showcase at Ybor City's 1920, where six local acts, visual artists, and bay area businesses will come together for an evening celebrating Tampa's creative ecosystem.

The event began with a conversation between 1920 owner Rich McIntyre and local musician George Pennington. Rather than simply booking another night of live music, McIntyre reached out to Pennington to help create something that would bring different corners of the local arts community together under one roof.

"They wanted to do something that benefits the music ecosystem of Tampa," Pennington said in our recent conversation about the event. "I'm just the artist liaison... putting together something on stage and making the magic happen."

The result is a lineup that stretches across much of Tampa Bay's musical landscape. Shevonne brings her powerhouse vocals and full band, The Force, while Pennington's own group, The Odyssey, blends rock, blues, and jazz influences. Ari Chi and Javier Solaris will showcase a new collaborative project (Ari + Javi) rooted in soul and hip-hop, Madelaine draws from country and Southern rock, Ella Jet delivers intimate, alternative-leaning songwriting, and Saints of Saturn rounds out the bill with its explosive, riff-driven rock n’ roll. Together, the lineup reflects the stylistic diversity Pennington hopes will make The Music Exchange feel like a snapshot of Tampa's creative community.

Pennington intentionally assembled musicians who represent different corners of the local scene, but share one common trait.

"I knew they were all going to be able to, at the drop of a hat, make people feel something really powerful with their music," he said.

That collaborative spirit extends well beyond the stage. Alongside the performances, Ari Chi’s long-running art raffle will feature work from five local visual artists, giving attendees the opportunity to win original pieces while supporting Tampa Bay creatives. Legends Guitars has donated one of their guitars for raffle as well, while other local businesses have also stepped in through sponsorships and food offerings, reinforcing the event's emphasis on community.

For Pennington, 1920 itself became part of the inspiration. The venue's setup, including a rooftop, covered outdoor stage, and colorful mural offered an opportunity to create an experience that feels as immersive as the performances themselves. His vision includes jungle plants, an art walk, and festival-style laser lighting to transform the space into something entirely its own.

The timing for the Wednesday event is also intentional. Doors open at 5:00, with music running from 6-9 pm, inviting people to stop by after work instead of committing to an all-night outing.

If the event succeeds, Pennington hopes it becomes the beginning of a continuing series that brings together musicians, artists, and businesses that might not otherwise cross paths. But he also knows this particular gathering is unique.

"This lineup will never happen again," he said. "This particular collection of people... this one will never happen again."

Whether it becomes the first chapter of an ongoing tradition or simply a memorable summer evening, The Music Exchange represents something Tampa's music scene has long done well: creating new opportunities by bringing creative people together.

Tickets for The Music Exchange at Ybor City’s 1920 on Wednesday, July 8 are still available and start at $23.09.
